Meal powder or ready-to-drink meal shakes: which should you choose?
The main difference is preparation: meal powder needs mixing, while a ready-to-drink meal shake is already prepared. Choosing between them means looking at your routine, the serving you will actually consume and the total cost. The format alone does not tell you which nutritional composition suits your preferences.
This guide compares powdered meal shakes with bottled meal drinks. A protein supplement is a different category: a high protein figure on the label does not, by itself, tell you whether a product is designed as a meal.
Powder and bottled meals at a glance
| What to compare | Meal powder | Ready-to-drink meal |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | Measure powder and liquid, then mix as directed. | Already mixed; follow the bottle instructions. |
| Equipment | A suitable shaker or blender and liquid. | No mixing equipment needed to drink from the bottle. |
| Serving | Count the powder and anything you add. | Check whether the label refers to 100 ml, a serving or the whole bottle. |
| After use | Clean the shaker and close the powder pack. | Follow opened-bottle storage instructions and dispose of the packaging appropriately. |
| Cost | Compare the total per prepared serving. | Compare the total per bottle, including delivery. |
1. Choose a routine you will actually follow
Powder can suit a regular preparation routine at home. If you already keep a shaker handy, measuring and mixing may fit naturally into your day. Follow the recommended preparation method and remember to allow for washing the container afterwards.
A bottled meal is convenient when you want to pick something up without mixing it first. You do not need to bring separate powder or find a mixing container. You are carrying the liquid from the start, though, so consider the space and weight in your bag.
Think beyond the seconds spent shaking. Which steps are you comfortable repeating? A large bag is only useful if you use it. Equally, there is no reason to abandon a preparation routine that works well for you.
2. Compare complete servings, not different label units
Values per 100 g of dry powder and per 100 ml of drink are not directly comparable. Convert both to the serving you intend to drink. For powder, record the amount used and include the nutrients in any milk or other ingredients you add.
Illustrative calculation with hypothetical figures: powder containing 20 g of protein per 100 g provides 18 g when you use 90 g. A 500 ml drink containing 6 g per 100 ml provides 30 g per bottle. These figures illustrate the arithmetic; they are not a comparison between two brands.
Then look at the complete nutrition table: energy, protein, carbohydrate, fat, fibre, vitamins and minerals. A larger bottle or a higher protein number is not a complete assessment. Check the ingredient and allergen information for the specific flavour as well.
3. Work out the actual cost per meal
A “from” price may depend on a subscription, a large order or a temporary promotion. Compare one-off purchases with one-off purchases, and subscriptions with subscriptions. Include delivery and check the number of labelled servings.
Divide the product cost plus the delivery cost allocated to it by the number of servings. Add the cost of milk or other additions where relevant. A separately purchased shaker is a one-off equipment expense, rather than part of every repeat food order.
Hypothetical euro example: a €25 bag providing ten servings, with €5 delivery, costs €3 per serving before additions. Six bottles costing €21 plus €3 delivery cost €4 each. These are made-up examples, not current Vitaminfood or competitor prices, and do not imply delivery availability in any country.
4. Storage matters before and after opening
Dry powder, a freshly mixed shake, a sealed bottle and an opened bottle may have different storage requirements. The shelf life of a sealed pack does not automatically apply after mixing or opening. Follow the instructions for the actual product.
Check whether you can meet those requirements wherever you plan to use it. Choose a format that fits your available storage, rather than assuming every meal shake can be kept in the same conditions.
Where Vitaminfood fits
Vitaminfood is a vegan ready-to-drink meal. Each 500 ml bottle contains 30 g of plant protein and 27 vitamins and minerals. No powder needs measuring and no liquid needs adding. See what is in Vitaminfood and use the current label for ingredients, allergens and storage instructions.

Common questions
Is powder always cheaper?
No format guarantees a lower price. Compare the actual cost per prepared serving, including delivery, additions and subscription conditions.
Is the recipe the same in powder and bottled form?
Do not assume so, even within one brand or flavour. Compare the ingredient lists and nutrition tables for each product separately.
Do I have to choose just one format?
No. You can prepare a shake when it suits you and choose a bottled meal at other times. The aim is a practical choice for your routine, not a single winner for everyone.
