Eating Natural and Healthy

Eating Natural and Healthy

Everybody wants to eat natural and healthy. Food processing has suddenly become the ubiquitous bubble no one wants to get caught in. GMOs, additives and fertilizers define this bubble that we are all fleeing.

At Vitaminfood we use pure natural ingredients only for all our meal options.

Are they the same thing though? Is Natural = Healthy? This piece is not meant to contradict popular opinion. In fact, it even solidifies it.

A natural and healthy diet is what our body craves. Not savory taste or Mediterranean flavors and appealing sights. Sure they make meals enjoyable and are what we crave but not the body. What we get from the stores often isn’t what the body needs.

In the market and on the supermarket shelves, there are healthy alternatives but not in the numbers. Vitaminfood is one of the few others that offer health value that matches your worth. Every human is entitled to good food and Vitaminfood offers natural and healthy meal replacements.

Why it is  important to eat natural

Answer: Fuel well feel well

*Top of the list is the nutritional value for your body. Good nutrition is complete and enables your organs to develop harmoniously. The result is a healthy body; healthy in each aspect and every muscle, that is what good fuel delivers. Nutrients fortify the body systems and the entire body is maintained in tune.

Your health is directly related to what you feed your body.

*Better for the environment –  the lesser the processing the smaller the carbon footprint for the specific diet.

*Reduces overeating and weight control – more often than not, natural food is more satisfying than refined foods, the fiber is mostly removed during processing, for example, milling of wheat to remove husks.

*Reduces disease risk -  refined foods and some additives are linked to chronic lifestyle diseases like cancer and heart complications. Phytonutrients that boost immunity are also lost in the processing thereby exposing a weaker immune system to disease attacks.

*Advances healing and recovery processes – less refined foods are better absorbed and used by the body proving ready and usable ingredients for the repair of tissues and cells. Natural products also contain more vitamins, antioxidants and phytonutrients. These all work together to build a stronger immune system.

Other individual benefits of eating natural include:

*Controlling preferences, containing allergies and regulating specific ingredient intake.

Unlike ready-made meals like a burger or pie, natural products give you much more control over what you consume. You do not get only what the manufacturer included. Neither do you forcefully consume what the manufacturer included even when you don’t want to.

Natural foods allow you to control your diet, so does Vitaminfood. Natural foods have their limitations brought about by unethical producers.

Not all natural food is healthy.

Not all is even as healthy as claimed to be. That’s right, natural quite frankly refers to the level of processing and modification the food has undergone before it gets to your plate or cup. Natural food is minimally processed, ethically grown and with no genetic modification.

Natural food is rich in naturally occurring nutrients that are continually washed off or chemically removed by processing.

What processing does to your food.

During processing the physical and chemical processes involved result in nutrient loss and denaturing.

Cooking is an example of such a process. It is a necessary process. Cook and drain, however, is a destructive process. The nutrients often pass from the food to the liquid which is then drained. Many water-soluble nutrients are lost this way.

The B vitamins and Vitamin C all washed down the drain into drainage systems and sewers.

In industrial processes alike, the nutrients may be lost depending on the method of preparation and others added to achieve industry-specific goals. These two are the problem with food processing and the foul air around it.

Additives VS Lost nutrients

Additives are added to enhance taste, flavor and nutritive value.

They can be grouped as having a negative impact on health or positive impact.

Those with negative impact include

*Added sugars and sweeteners like sucrose concentrates. These are discussed further here.

*Preservatives like sugar mould

*Trans fat

*Food coloring

*Sodium benzoate and sodium nitrite

Those with positive impacts are the mineral, vitamin and fiber boosts.

Lost nutrients are those washed away or denatured by processing.

They include B vitamins and Vitamin C which are highly unstable in excess heat and washed off in drained solutions.

Phytonutrients are also lost.

Phytonutrients are all bioactive compounds that keep healthy and could keep you alive too. There are more than25,000 phtyonutrients grouped into betalains, indoles, phenols and terpenes among others.

Aside from the additives and lost nutrients, GMOs are another part of natural foods that makes them unhealthy. Linked to internal organ damage, slowed brain growth, thickening of the digestive tract, food allergies and gastrointestinal problems, the GMOs are a major player in output and quality enhancement.

Fertilizers alike are used in the production of foods and are directly linked to cancer risks and heavy metal poisoning. Nitrogenous fertilizers reduce the Vitamin C concentration in plants even fruits.

Another term relevant to this debate is organic. Organic means that the food has been grown without artificially manufactured chemicals but only on naturally sourced fertilizers and pesticides.  Organic food is obtained solely by natural processes and natural farm inputs.

Organic is not vegan as some ingredients may be obtained from organically reared animals. Vegan sourced is another variation based on whether any animal products are included in the diet.

Whichever way, you analyze your food, Vitaminfood is organic, healthy and vegan sourced.

Having understood what is natural, healthy, organic and vegan-sourced

Let’s face the facts

A healthy diet is desirable. Veggies and fruits are vital. Organic food is healthier. You would love to pluck your own oranges and harvest your own wheat.

We do not always have time to selectively shop, and prepare healthy meals. Most organic produce is sold locally but you live in a city with no local farms. Your food is transported across 1000+ miles.

Healthier alternatives are expensive. Most of our diets even natural and organic are not nutritionally complete; we do guesses with our diets.

What we have is genetically modified. It is not vegan sourced. It is also cheaper in the short term but more expensive in the long run. The food sold is aimed for financial gains not nutrition.

Vitaminfood delivers a healthy meal that is organically grown and 100% vegan sourced with minimal processing.  We offer value and health where it is rare.

Tips on how to eat healthy and natural

It is bitter to admit that humans cannot do without processed foods. Processing increases shelf life, avails viable nutrients when and where needed and increases output. It is a greatly important activity.

On the other hand, reducing the processing and regulating the intake of processed foods is something we do. We minimize it to the bare minimum of drying peas and grinding nutrients but cannot do without it for the reasons listed above. Processing is beneficial if:

*The nutrients are retained.

*More value is added than is removed.

*The process is aimed at complete nutrition.

Here is what to do:

  1.       Prioritize water as your main drink. Above the other sweetened drinks with added sugars or even soy and almond milk, your body needs water most. So give it that first and in the most quantity.
  2.       Read labels habitually – it is by taking a keen interest in what you are consuming that you will improve your diet. Know what is in your cart before you pay and before you consume.
  3.       Visit your farmers market – the farmers market is the base of all complete nutrition. It is where the good stuff comes from. Even our ingredients are from a similar source, just that we buy from the farm and in bulk. If you got some spare time, go and handpick your food.
  4.       Organic sources from your shop shelves. This eliminates risks associated with GMOs and synthetic farm inputs.
  5.       Avoid added sugars or refined carbs at all costs. This is the epicenter of food processing. These are undesirable and unnecessary for your body.

Barriers to eating healthy that you need to beat

Organic and natural sources are more expensive and our budgets cannot always contain diet plans. Go for more affordable and sustainable engineered alternative solutions.

The foods are not readily available unless you have a farmers market down the corner. Visit your most organic sources or join a food cooperative for fresh produce supply.

Some are only available in season. Well in this case you will have to get used to making the most of what is in season. Feed on what you got then as your body creates reserves of some nutrients you get an abundance of.

False labels and nutritional factsheets are a disaster for the population. Very difficult to decipher and get past. Look for case studies, reviews, testimonials and demonstrations of product effectiveness. These are less falsified especially if controlled by a third party.
